Volkswagen to launch an electric car by 2013 Electric cars conceived by major auto companies are designed to compete with cars powered by an internal combustion engine. That means that they must be capable of travelling at freeway speeds over intercity distances, which, in turn, means that they must have either a range-extending generator powered by an internal combustion engine or half a ton of batteries. Either way, you will have an very expensive vehicle -- just as the auto companies want. However, a lightly built vehicle with a small electric motor can easily keep up with urban traffic travelling at speeds to 50 kph. Such a vehicle requires only a small battery and no onboard generator, since travel distances within urban areas are short. A small urban electric car would serve the great majority of nearly everyone's transportation needs safely, quietly and cheaply. Mitsubishi electric car doing well in pre-sales Mitsubishi is not a major auto maker and so can afford to develop a sensible electric car. The iMiEV is almost sensible: it has no on-board generator and it is compact. However, it is designed to travel at highway speed and thus requires a large, heavy and expensive battery. What Mitsubishi should do now is offer a city version, with a smaller motor, a smaller battery and a lower price tag. Then they should design a second generation vehicle that is even smaller and lighter and put it on the market fast before the Chinese auto makers take full possession of this market sector.

Even supposedly alternative media ventures such as CounterPunch (Alexander Cockburn) and antiwar.com (Justin Raimondo) ridicule evidence that the Trade Center towers were brought down by explosives, although to anyone with a grasp of Grade 12 physics it must be evident that no other explanation is possible. (The inference is dictated by the fall of Building 7 at a velocity of 9.81 m per second per second -- the acceleration due to the unimpeded action of gravity, and the fall of the Twin Towers at almost the same rate.)
But even if the truth about 9-11 is never officially acknowledged, a person's beliefs about it provide a useful litmus test of intellectual competence. On that test about half the American population is qualified to vote. Unfortunately, under the existing electoral system, their influence is largely negated by the votes of the other, dimmer, half of the population -- the same people, presumably, who still believe Saddam had weapons of mass destruction.
