Mr. Emerson expressed surprise that the Liberals want their money back after he has "done so much and raised so much for the Liberal Party." More to the point, one would have thought, is why do Liberals object to Mr. Emerson doing, as a member of the Conservative government, exactly what Liberals supported him in doing when he was a member of the Liberal government.
When, during the election, we argued that the choice between the Liberals and Conservatives was a choice between parties without a difference in policy, we did not predict that the interchangeability of policy would mean the interchangeability of personel. But on reflection, why not? And if Emerson, why not other former Liberal cabinet ministers? They could bring both beauty and brains to Mr. Harper's front bench. Some might hesitate to betray their friends and former colleagues. But Blindy, Brison, Dr. Keith Martin have already ratted on the former friends and colleages. Why not, then, re-rat?
Sadly for them, however, Harper probably has his eye on better things. A chunk of the Bloc, around 20 members, would rebuild the Mulroney coalition and give Harper the majority that will spare us 18 months of electioneering while the parties jockey for a favorable opportunity to precipitate another election.
